Welcome to Cribs4Students.com (Cribs). I hope that Cribs can save you all a lot of time and money. But first, let me brief you on how it was all started.
I started looking for off-campus housing with some of my friends towards the end of my fall semester in college and in the midst of studying for final exams. My search went on tediously for weeks. I did not find the experience enjoyable. Surveying lecture hall’s bulletin boards for apartment listings and perusing local newspapers was quite cumbersome and time consuming. Luckily, I found a decent apartment, but I didn’t think it was worth all the time and effort. I had to go through hundreds of listings and had setup appointments with landlords (accommodating to their schedules of course) all while trying to study for my exams.
I graduated from college and wanted to move to New York City for work and grad school. What did I do? I went to Sublet.com, Citylease.com, Rent.com, and many other websites. The list goes on and on, but I will save you the agony that I went through. These sites charged nominal fees and required me to sign up for a membership account to use their services. In a vulnerable situation, I paid for their services and was quite disappointed with the results. Instead, I got back a whole lot of nothing. I then turned to Craiglist’s free apartment listings, but found that close to half of their listings were misleading (i.e. “$200/month housing in mid-Manhattan, pay in advance” – I find this hard to believe).
I was in disbelief after considering the money poorly spent and the time it took to drive down to the city to meet my potential roommates and landlords. It was not easy driving down four to five times (7 hours round trip) every other week. Something had to be done…
What did I do? I contacted my college roommate, Andres A. Mok, who was immediately fascinated with my business pitch; and is now my Chief Technology Officer. Together, we created Cribs4Students.com under our holding company, Entrepreneurial Holdings LLC. Our goal is to provide one common and convenient location to address all your apartment searching needs.
So here you have it, all the searching and posting free of charge. We also added a video uploading feature so landlords, leaseholders, and property owners can upload video clips of their apartments themselves. Cribs’ video uploading feature can be used similarly to job screening interviews. No other apartment information vending website currently supports this feature. I really believe that this can help all of you in your search process. If I had the opportunity to view video clips of potential roommates and landlords, I probably wouldn’t have wasted my time on many of them.
Save time and money,
Michael C. V. Dang
